Step-by-step: how to get a Kuwait driving license (expat)
Getting a driving license in Kuwait requires completing a few important steps, including checking eligibility, preparing documents, passing medical and driving tests, and completing approved driving training. Follow this simple guide to understand the complete process of getting your Kuwait driving license.
1. Verify Eligibility and Prepare Required Documents
Before applying for a driving license in Kuwait, make sure you meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants usually need to meet conditions related to salary, education, and residency period.
Required documents include:
- Valid Civil ID copy
- Passport copy
- Two recent passport-size photos with a blue background
- Blood group certificate
- Attested university degree (if required)
- Valid residency (Iqama) copy
- Salary certificate from your employer
Confirm your eligibility before visiting the Traffic Department to avoid delays.
2. Visit Your Local Maroor (Traffic Department)
After preparing your documents, book an appointment through the Sahel app and visit your local Maroor (Traffic Department) office.
During your visit:
- Submit your required documents
- Complete eligibility verification
- Open your driving license file
- Receive your learner’s permit
- Pay the required application fees
This step officially starts your driving license application process in Kuwait.
3. Complete Medical and Vision Tests
A medical fitness test is required before beginning your driving lessons. You must complete the approved medical examination through an MOI-approved clinic or Traffic Department medical unit.
The vision test checks your eyesight level. If you use glasses or contact lenses, bring them during the test because your driving license may include a vision restriction.
4. Join an Approved Driving School in Kuwait
Enroll in a licensed driving school approved by the Ministry of Interior. Professional driving lessons help you learn safe driving skills and prepare for your road test.
During your training, you will learn:
- Vehicle control
- Road safety rules
- Parking techniques
- Roundabout driving
- Highway driving
- Lane changing
- Proper use of mirrors and indicators
Most beginners require around 10–20 practical driving sessions depending on their experience.
5. Pass the Computer Theory Test (QMC Test)
The theory test is an important part of getting a driving license in Kuwait. The QMC computer test includes questions about:
- Kuwait traffic laws
- Road signs
- Speed limits
- Safe driving practices
- Traffic regulations
The test is available in multiple languages, including English and Arabic. Practicing traffic questions before the exam can improve your chances of passing.
6. Pass the Practical Driving Test
After completing your driving lessons, your driving school will arrange your practical road test at the Traffic Department.
The examiner will check your ability in:
- Vehicle control
- Parking (including parallel parking)
- Roundabout handling
- Lane discipline
- Using indicators correctly
- Checking mirrors
- Safe stopping and driving decisions
Stay calm, follow traffic rules, and demonstrate safe driving habits during the test.
7. Pay Fees and Collect Your Driving License
Once you successfully pass both the theory and practical tests, you can complete the final payment process and receive your Kuwait driving license.
For expatriates, the driving license is generally valid for several years according to current Kuwait regulations. License collection services are available during designated Traffic Department working hours.
